STUDENT HERO APPLICATION

Thank you for your interest in the Houston Food Bank's Student Hero Volunteer Program. We are so glad that you selected us to make a difference in your community! 

During this session, students learn core principles of leadership and will be able to accomplish the following:
  1. Train and oversee volunteers in various projects at the Houston Food Bank (HFB) ensuring that volunteers have a meaningful experience.
  2. Coordinate a Food/Supply Drive to help those in need in our community.
  3. Understand hunger as a Southeast Texas Issue and learn to measure the impact of their work. All volunteer projects have an impact measurement tied to the issue of hunger.
  4. Attend HFB sponsored professional development workshops provided by staff and guest speakers.

Requirements:
High-school student (freshman-senior)
Completed application
Completed interview
4 shifts per month commitment
Orientation and training sessions

The Houston Food Bank is open Sunday through Saturday of the month. Student Heroes can volunteer at any of the shifts as follows:

Monday-Friday: 
     7:30 a.m.- 12:00 p.m.
     12:30 p.m.- 4:00 p.m.
     5:30 p.m.- 9:00 p.m.

Saturday (our busiest day!) :
     7:30 a.m.- 12:00 p.m.
     12:30 p.m.- 4:00 p.m.

Every third Sunday: 8:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

In addition to these regular shifts, Student Heroes can coordinate food drives to gain additional hours and will occasionally have the opportunity to volunteer at off-site events.
Cell Phone Policy:
  • Once you sign-in, please keep you cell phone in your pocket, or locker.
  • Do not use your phone throughout the volunteer shift.
  • If you want to take photos of volunteering in action, please ask a Houston Food Bank Staff to take a quick photo of you.
  • If you have an emergency, please step out of the project area, into the lobby, or main street hallway, and briefly use your cell phone.
Behavior:
  • Executive Board member sees you misbehaving/not working = warning
  • 1st strike= verbal warning
  • 2nd strike = no hours for the day
  • 3rd strike = kicked out of program
If any employee or Apple Corps member complains about you, you DO NOT get a warning - you will not receive hours for the day and will be kicked out of the program for another offense.

Hours Requirement:
  • 4 shifts a month
  • You must reapply to next term (Terms are Spring-Jan thru May, Summer- June thru Aug. Fall- Sept thru Dec.)
  • Communicate any problems/obstacles/hours mistakes to Program Director
Dress Code:
  • Wear your Student Hero t-shirt (once received), name tag and “questions” badge when you volunteer
  • Do not wear “ripped” or torn jeans
  • No leggings of any kind
  • When wearing shorts, they must be knee length
  • Wear closed toe shoes when working your shift.  (safety shoes are preferred)
Expectations:
  • Show up on time and stay committed to projects
  • Reach the 4 shifts per month requirement
  • Remember that you represent the Houston Food Bank
  • You are a leader
  • Do not congregate into Student Hero groups
  • Lead by example
  • Interact with the volunteers, be sociable and ALWAYS be polite and professional
  • Directors reserve the right to remove student heroes from the program
An interview is required for all new applicants. It is an opportunity to present aspects of yourself seen beyond your application, deeming it most conducive for the purposes of the review board. 

Only a selected number of applicants will be invited for interviews, based on the quality of the online application submitted.  Once interviewed, you will be notified within 72 hours by email if you are accepted.
